On Friday night, Alex, Stacie and I had tickets to go to the International Rules game: Ireland vs. Australia. Basically, the game is a mixture of Irish Gaelic Football and Australian Rules football with concessions and compromises in small parts of each of the games. It’s not played regularly in a league, rather just in yearly tournaments such as this one. Check out this link for a quick explanation.
The three of us went into the city a little early to meet up with one of Alex’s friends from home who is in the country on business. We met at The Porterhouse pub, a pub that brews all of their own beers, and had some appetizers and drinks before the game. We got to the game, and after getting our official tickets in hand, had to walk basically the entire length around the stadium to get to the entrance that we were supposed to head in through. With our phenomenal luck, we happened to stumble upon the student entrance, where we received 10 euro back after handing them our ticket! Nice!
We got into the game and found our seats easily enough. The game had already started by the time we got there, but we jumped right in with the cheering and everything! It was a really interested game to watch- made me want to play it! It’s a combination of carrying, bouncing and kicking the ball to get it down the field and make a score.
There are a couple of different point values: if you get it in the net, the goal counts for 6 points. If you get it through the two tallest poles, it is 3 points, and if you get it through a tall pole and a shorter pole, it’s 1 point. We actually knew one of the kids who was playing on the Ireland team because he goes to DCU- he was also named the All-Ireland player of the series!
The game was a ton of fun overall, even though Ireland ended up losing by 3. In the third and fourth quarter though, we made a huge comeback! The game came down to the wire and Australia got a lucky kick through the high goal posts to seal the deal. After a long line of traffic back to DCU, Alex, Stacie and I got dressed up to go out for Halloween into the city again! Here are some photos from the game:
